Veena
Sahasrabuddhe (popularly known as Veenatai) was born Veena Shankar Bodas at
Kanpur, India on 14 September 1948. She is married, with one son and one
daughter.
Father, Pt. Shankar Shripad Bodas was a disciple of the legendary Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. Pt. Shankar Shripad Bodas and brother Pt. Kashinath Shankar Bodas are her two gurus. Other mentors include Padmashri Balwant Rai Bhatt, Pt. Vasant Thakar and Pt. Gajananbua Joshi.
Veenatai is widely acclaimed today as a performer of
the khayal style of Indian classical
singing and of moving bhajan devotional songs. She
is regularly invited to perform at the most prestigious events all over India.
Labels including HMV (EMI), BMG-Crescendo and Sony have published a total of 40
albums of hers. Her music appeals to other musicians, elders with decades of
listening experience and schoolchildren alike, because her music respects
traditional values and is yet very personal.
Veenatai, established "Shankar Sangeet
Vidyalaya", a school of music affiliated to the Akhil Bharatiya
Gandharva Mahavidyalaya (A.B.G.M.V) Mandal during 1976.
Veenatai conducted lecture-demonstrations for
listeners at the St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, and on the "Vividh Bharati"
channel of All India Radio. Participated in the production of a video lesson for
the Open University, UK, as artist-expert. Along with vocal concert, she
delivered lecture-demonstrations at the Vocal Festival at Stockholm in May 1994.
She also delivered vocal concert at "Voices of the World" festival at Copenhagen
in March 1995 . Taught music appreciation to students of the "Penn in India"
program of University of Pennsylvania (conducted in Pune), in 1996 and 97.
As on the roles of performer and guru of music have
always been equally significant to her. While living on the campus at the IIT,
Kanpur from 1968 to 1984,in Pune from 1990 to 2002 and at IIT
Bombay from 2002 to 2005 she taught
privately. She also worked at the department of music at the SNDT University's
College of Arts and Commerce for Women, Pune from June 1985 to September 1990.
She was department head during 1988 to 1990.
During 2002-2004 she taught formal as well as informal
courses at IIT
Bombay as Adjunct Professor. As
Artist-in-Residence at IIT
Kanpur during March-April 2009, she
taught music
and conducted lecture-demonstrations
.
She won All India Radio national level classical Vocal
competition at the age of 25. Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, 1993.

SUMU Awards, Mumbai
Several of her students are being recognized for their
art; some already have commercial recordings to their credit.
Her goal is to continue propagating the music she loves in her dual roles of teacher and performer.
